JAM NUT

JAM NUT

A jam nut is a low-profile nut, typically half as tall as a standard nut. It is commonly used as a type of locknut, where it is “jammed” up against a standard nut to lock the two in place. It is also used in situations where a standard nut would not fit. In practice, these nuts are both screwed onto the bolt and then they are tightened against each other. The jam nut is a thin nut, normally used under a full nut to develop locking action.

There are a couple of different reasons you might want to use jam nuts. The first is if you are fastening to very soft material and cannot risk hurting the material by fastening against it. The second is when you need to attach something to the bolt but let it move around on the bolt. Hex jam nuts from SEF are thin nuts that have the same dimensions as the standard hex nut for the head alone. Its primary application lies in fastening the standard nut into place by being threaded onto a bolt and made to run tight against the parent nut. This will ensure that the bolts do not move out of place and will be securely held against vibrations and small and constant movements. In another use, these nuts are used as a leveler to even out surfaces of operations.
